Diesel Exhaust Fluid HandlingWhat is DEF? DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) is an organic, non toxic compound composed of 32.5% urea and 67.5% DI water. In a Selective Catalytic Converter System (SCR), diesel exhaust fluid is added to the diesel exhaust in the presence of a catalyst to convert smog producing nitrogen oxide into harmless nitrogen and water vapor. The emissions in the exhaust can then meet the EPA’s new stricter emission standards for new diesel vehicles. This mandate takes effect January 1, 2010. To meet the new regulations, diesel trucks will have on-board DEF storage tanks ranging in capacity from 16 to 30 gallons. An important requirement of an SCR (Selective Catalytic Converter) System is the consistent refilling of these storage tanks. How are DEF Pumps used?
